How Coronary Heart Disease Affects Homeostasis

Links and Resources

The cardiovascular system consists of three primary parts: heart, arteries, and veins (Study.com, 2019). The cardiovascular system is responsible for circulating blood throughout the body (Study.com, 2019). The main vital role that the cardiovascular system is controlling the movement and amount of blood that circulates to reach every cell and tissue (National Cancer Institute, 2019). The cardiovascular system transports carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones, oxygen, and cells to the assigned organ(s) and tissue(s) (Study.com, 2019).

Coronary heart disease is referred to as the narrowing of the arteries, causing the blood vessels to not supply the oxygen and blood needed for the heart to function properly (Nordqvist, 2018). Due to a buildup of cholesterol and plaque, the arteries become hardened and narrowed (Medline Plus, 2019). Over time, coronary heart disease can the heart muscles to weaken, and can potentially lead to arrythmias and heart failure (Medline Plus, 2019).

The cardiovascular system maintains homeostasis of the body by circulating blood, and transporting oxygen, nutrients, etc., to the proper tissues and organs (Study.com, 2019). Coronary heart disease affects the homeostasis by blocking the arteries, which are needed for transporting all necessities to the heart - oxygen, nutrients, hormones, etc (Medline Plus, 2019). Coronary heart disease builds up plaque that blocks blood from flowing properly through the arteries, and can potentially lead to the heart to stop pumping, which could be fatal (Nordqvist, 2018).
