“Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Coke,...No Coke, Pepsi.” You hear an order at Wendy’s. Next...It’s your turn so you place your order and pick up a burger with a large order of fries. Time to sink your teeth into a Wendy’s burger,... “the best in town!” Chew, chew, chew...swallow. Chew, chew, chew… swallow. Chew, chew, chew… swallow. Chew, chew, chew… swallow. You think, “yum” with a smile.

Systems at Work

The digestive system is the main system involved in breaking down necessary nutrients and disposing of useless waste. First the food enters the mouth, where it is broken down by the teeth. It then travels through the esophagus, the stomach, the intestines, and eventually reaching the rectum, where it is disposed of accordingly. All throughout this process the body is sifting through the food morsels and absorbing nutrients.

The musculatory system plays a large role in food consumption in the human body. Muscles in the jaw help chew and break down food. Contractions called peristalsis then push food down the esophagus. All throughout the body muscles are pushing food and nutrients through the digestive system.

The cardiovascular system is important in food consumption because the bloodstream transports important nutrients from food to all body cells.
