Earthquakes

Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock of the earth surface. About 900 000 earthquakes occur over the world in each year. Earthquakes are measured by the Richter Scale which scales from -1.5 to 12. Earthquakes usually last less than one minute. Earthquakes can not be predicted. The west coast is most at risk of having a earthquake though Earthquakes can occur in mid west and along the east coast.

What Causes Earthquakes?

The earths surface is covered by 20 plates which move coutinously and slowly past each other. When the plates squeeze or scratch, huge rocks are formed at the edges. The rocks shift caueing an earthquake. You can think of it this way, if you bend a pencil it will snap in the middle, releasing stress you have put on it. Earthquakes in the ocean can cause tsuanamis.

Earthquake viberation travel very fast, up to 14 kilometres in a second. The fastest seismic wave took less then 20 minutes to reach the other side of earth.
