[2015] Maddy Noske (Mrs B Year 5, Mrs B): Earthquake and Tsunami

How do you Know if an tsunami is coming after an earthquake?

?

?

An earthquake is movements in the Earth's crust which happen when movements cause fractures in rocks along a fault line causing intense vibrations and seismic waves.

Tsunamis are often caused by earthqakes that create multiple waves which travel accross the ocean when a large body of water is suddenly displaced.

What is an EARTHQUAKE?

It is a risk to be in a tsunami hazard zone ifthe earthquake is longer than 20 seconds. If you are at the beach and there is an earthquakeimmediaely move to higher ground or inland. Ifyou can't evacuate go to the top floor of a strongbuilding or as a last resort climb a tree.

What is a TSUNAMI?

Underwater landslides are caused by earthquakes which displace large amounts of sea water which causes a TSUNAMI.

The Earth's crust is made up of pieces known as Tectonic Plates that move constantly.

How are they connected?

If you are at the beach and there is an earthquake immediatly move to higher ground or inland.

Background Infomation

Introduction:This term our class have been learning about sudden geological changes and extreem weather conditions, we all had to do a project on what we thought would be intresting and we wanted to learn about and I chose earthquakes and tsunamis.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Conclusion

This term we have been learning about natural disasters and we got to choose an I Wonder Question' to investigate. I looked into earthquakes and tsunamis. I found out that tsunamis usually happen if the earthquake lasts 20 seconds or more and happens under the ocean. I also found out that every earthquake is different. If you are at the beach wwhen there is an earthquake, get to high ground straight away. I have enjoyed this topic and learnt a lot.

Fun Fact

Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
