Earth Science

Earth Science, or Geoscience has four main branches. Those branches are geology, astronomy, meteorolgy, and oceanography. Geology is the study of Earth's form and composition and the changes it has undergone and undergoes. Astronomy is the study of the universe, celestial bodies, and phenomena. Meterology is the study of the atmosphere, atmospheric phenomena, weather and climate. Oceanography is the study of the ocean and oceanic phenomena.

The Earth is made up of four main spheres: the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, the geosphere, and the biosphere. The hydrosphere is the water portion of Earth. The atmosphere is the gaseous portion of the planet. The geosphere is the layer of Earth below the atmospheres and oceans. It is composed of the core, mantle, and crust. The biosphere is all of the life on Earth, in parts of the solid Earth, hydrosphere and atmosphere in which living organisms can be found. We live in the biosphere.

A system is any size group of interacting parts that for a complex whole. The Earth functions as a system because all of it's spheres or physical subdivions work together to maintain balance on the planet. Each sphere is needed in order for live to be on the planet.

A renewable resource is a resource that can constantly be replenished by natural means. Some examples are trees, water, and solar energy. A non-renewable resource is one that cannot be replenished. Some examples are fossil fuels, minerals, and metal ores.
