Earth Day

Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. Nelson wanted to educate and raise awareness about environmental issues after witnessing the damage from a massive oil spill in 1969. As a result, 20 million Americans gathered in streets, parks and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy sustainable environment in coast-to-coast rallies.

In 1990 a group of environmental leaders worked together to make Earth Day a global event. 200 million people in 141 different countries liften environmental issues to the world stage. The fight for a clean environment continues today!
