Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809. Poe's father and mother, both professional actors, died before the poet was three and John and Frances Allan raised him as a foster child in Richmond, Virginia. Poe's work as an editor, a poet, and a critic had an extreme impact on American literature.

Many of Poe's short stories and poems are dark, and deep that are categorized as horror and detective fiction. One of his most famous pieces, The Pit and the Pendulum, take a reader on a mans mindset as he is tortured and gets closer and closer to death.

"All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream" - Edgar Allan Poe

Arguably, his most horrific, yet thrilling short stories is The Black Cat.This is my favorite story that Poe shares with us. It is about a man who seems sane... but very clearly is not. He has some black cat killing fancy, which ultimately leads him to killing his wife and burrying her inside of a wall. This story reveals us of Poe's evident state-of-mind.
