-trouble recognizing rhyming words-family history of reading difficulties-struggles with decoding-may reverse letters, difficulty with spelling-handwriting is poor-slightly delayed speech
Belief Statement
Strategies-teach them rules for spelling-help them to learn how to set a purpose for reading to aid comprehension-use audiobooks!-use VAKS (visual, auditory, kinesthetic & sensory)-find out what they like (interest survey) & provide reading material in that area!-word sorts-note taking strategies-PRACTICE! (Stanovich, 1986)
What is dyslexia?-"a reading disability, specifically language based disorder characterized by difficulties in decoding, insufficient phonological processing abilities" (Fink, 1996)-impacts spoken language-can only be diagnosed using an MRI
Dyslexia
Characteristics
Misconceptions
-anyone who reverses letters is dyslexic-dyslexic people will never be able to read fluently or be successful-people with dyslexia don't like to read
We believe that EVERY child can learn, when given intensive support and reading material that accounts for their personal interests.
Nicole Diamond, Alycia Schlenk, & Maria Riccio
EVERYONE can learn!
