Duke Ellington

By Ethan Cullen

Edward Kennedy Ellington was born on April 29, 1899 and was interested in music from that day forward. At the age of seven, Ellington started playing piano. Throughout his life, he played music and at one point had his own orchestra. Ellington played various genres of music, including blues, gospel, film scores, popular, and classical. He was a bandleader, pianist, and a composer.

After his drummer left for New York, Ellington left for Harlem and became a mager figure in the Harlem Renissance. After being in an orchestra for awhile, he wanted to do something on his own. There was a new jazz craze in the making and in this period, Ellington would do his most wellknown work. The band reached a creative peak in the early 1940s, and became famous for songs such as Take The A Train and many other classics. He died on May 24, 1974.
