History and CultureDry Tortugas was established to protect the island and marine ecosystems of the Dry Tortugas, to preserve Fort Jefferson and submerged cultural resourses such as shipwrecks, and to allow for public access in a regulated manner.

Explore a 19th Century FortAlmost 70 miles west of the Key West lies the remote Dry Tortugas National Park. The 100-square mile park is mostly open water with seven small islands. Accessible only by boat or seaplane, the world know it as the home of the magnificent Fort Jefferson.

Did you know?Fort Jefferson served for a time as a remote prison facility. One of it's most famous inmates was no other than Dr. Samuel Mudd, who set the leg of john wilkes booth following the assassination of President Lincoln.

Did you know?Despite over 30 years of construction, massive Fort Jefferson was never truly completed on the islands of Dry Tortugas.
