DROUGHT

Severe droughtregularly affects some parts of Australia, oftenwith enormous impacts on agriculture and theeconomy. For example, the drought from 1991to 1995 is estimated to have cost the Australianeconomy $5 billion and had a large social impact.

- Droughts are caused by a lack of rain over time.- The cause of droughts is easily understood, but hard to prevent. - In Australia crop failures, high food prices, and stock deaths can occur as a result of drought.

Because people use water in so many different ways, there is no universal definition of drought.

"A long period of abnormally low rainfall, especially one that adversely affects growing or living conditions".
