Dred Scott was an African American man who went to the Supreme Court with the idea that because he lived in free land he could become a free man. But this did not work out in his favor because the Court ruled 7-2 and Taney, a pro slavery activist judge, stated his opinion saying that Blacks should not be considered citizens wether they were free slaves or not in the US. Because of Scott's case it became a big issue and was considered unconstitutional and angered abolitionists.
The Dred Scott Decision
Even though Dred Scott was not a citizenhe did become a free man and he becamea iconic figure for US history because he led the antislaverists like Abraham Lincolnto end slavery and consider them to all be citizens.
