High altitude exp. were done because they needed to figure out what was happening in the brain when being exposed to high altitudes. They'd split open their skulls and inspect brain.

Above is a picture of the Hypothermia experiment. The used the icyvat to lower body temp. Then later using sun lamp to reheat the body. Sun lamps were so hot they burned the skin.
