El Greco was born in Crete in 1541. He was a painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renessaince.

El Greco's dramatic and expressionist style puzzled other painters at the time and was forgotten soon after his death, but came to be appreciated in the 20th century. He influenced both the Expressionist and Cubist styles as well as many poets and writers.
