Dolley Madison

I was born on May 20, 1768 in ew Garden, North Carolina. I lived on a plantation with my parents, four brothers, and three sisters. Later, we moved to Pennsylvania. In 1790 I married John Todd and we had two sons: John Payne and William Temple. Unfortunately in 1793, my husband and William died of yellow fever. I married James Madison in 1794. He was elected president in 1809. I loved being the first lady. I set the standard for all of the later first ladies to follow. Our term was from 1809-1817. We retired to Montpilier. My husband, James passed away peacefully in 1836. I later passed away in 1849 at the age of 81.

I am known as the first First Lady. Zachary Taylor had a part in giving me that title. I loved hosting parties at the White House. Everyone thought I was an excellent hostess. I'm even known for serving ice cream at the White House! It was said that everyone loved me, but I loved everyone as well.

Burning of DC

In 1814, during the War of 1812, the British were attacking Washington DC. I saved a portrait of George Washington from being burned with the White House.
