[2015] Lexi and Kara: Diverticulosis

-eat a high fiber diet-get plenty of fluid-exercise regularly

-develops due to weak places in the colon giving away under pressure-this causes marble-sized pouches to protrude through the colon wall -when the pouches tear, inflammation occurs resulting in diverticulitis

Causes

-usually no symptoms, unless the diverticula (bulging pouches) become inflammed (diverticulitis) or infected, resulting in fever and abdominal pain-some people experience abdominal tenderness, bloating, blood in stool, change in bowel habits, constipation, nausea, or flatulence

Symptoms

the best way to treat this is to avoid constipation:-take Metamucil-eat more fiber-take a laxative-exercise and intake fluidswhen diverticula become inflammed, a liquid diet, antibiotics, or surgery in sever cases may be necessary

Treatment

Diverticulitis will recur in 20-30% of patients. Recurrence may be prevented in more than 70% who supplement their diet with fiber. In some cases, a colonoscopy may be recommended after it has healed.
