Digital Divide
The digital divide is the gap between those who have access to technology and those who do not. The two main causes of this divide are the high costs of technology and the fact that there is a lack of electricity in developing countries. There are many groups working to close the digital divide including The Communication Workers of America and a group called One Laptop Per Child. The digital divide can be looked at many different social ways including the gap between the rich and the poor, old and young, developed and developing countries, and a racial divide. The gap also has to do with the fact that simply prodiving someone with technology will not bridge the gap; the person will have to be interested in the technology.
Do you think the digital divide will ever be bridged?
A wide variety of non-profit organizations are working to close the digital divide. Although attemps are be made to bridge this gap, it seems as if the higher educated will always have the most access to technology, leaving the uneducated at the opposite end of the spectrum.
