Dian Fossey

A close bond between Dian and Digit made it extremely difficult for Dian to cope with Digit's death in 1977.

Dian Studied in Rwanda until December 26, 1985 when she was mysteriously found murdered. She was found with a large knife in her skull. It is thought that a poacher murdered her.

In 1983, Dian published her book about her studies, Gorillas in the Mist. The book was later re-made into a movie in 1988, starring Sigourney Weaver.

*After obtaining a bachelor's in occupational therapy at San Juan State College in CA, Fossey accepted a job in her field at Kosair Crippled Children's Hospital in Kentucky. *After reading a book about how mountain gorillas are going extinct by zoologist George Beals Schaller, Fossey was inspired and in 1963 she took a loan out to travel to Africa. She visited the camp of British Anthropologist Dr. Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey, who later funded Fossey's long-term study on mountain gorillas in 1966.
