The possible causes of depression are endless. From a death of a family member, to beingbullied by schoolmates, different situations may expose one to the tragic disorder of depression. It can also come from genes or brain chemistry. In some cases, depression is a seasonal condition where one becomes depressed during a certain time of the year, more commonly in the winter. Many people do not think it is possible for children to encounter depression, but this is untrue. The disorder affects 2% of young children and 5-8% of adolescents.

Symptoms vary from person to person. Diagnosis include difficulty concentrating or making decisions, decreased energy, feelings of guilt, or worthlessness, pessimism, emptiness, anxiety, over or under eating, insomnia or excessive sleeping, loss of interest in activities that were once pleasurable, headaches and suicidal thoughts or attempts. Although depression is a mood and can be an emotion felt by anyone, a person with clinical depression will have all or more than half of these symptoms. Depression could be eating anyone. In a lot of cases, depressed people are often very happy and optimistic when around others, but it is all an act in order to keep it a secret.

A depressed child will usually have trouble getting out of bed in the mornings, and not care how they look when they go to school. A lack of concentration and poor academic performance normally occurs. Friends are not usually available because the child makes no effort to have friends. Not only is this affecting the child, but the parents are affected as well. Normally, parents will stress since they feel like it is their fault, and worry that their child may harm himself or others.

Not all kids are fortunate enough to have a teacher that truly cares and sympathizes for their depression. It is best, however, that a teacher is fully aware of the condition and is capable of working with such. For depressed students, teachers can help by providing frequent feedback on academic and social performances. They can help the student set goals, teach problem solving skills, coach them in organization, and develop communication skills. Giving opportunities for social interactions also helps the depressed student, along with a frequent monitor for suical tendencies.
