Dengue Fever

The first cases of Dengue Fever (DF) were recorded in 1779 in Batavia, Indonesia, and Cairo. In 1780, there was an epidemic reported in Philadelphia, PA. For the past 200 years, pandemics have been recorded in tropical and subtropical climates at 10 to 30 year intervals. In 1944, Albert Sabin successfully isolated the virus that causes DF and found that it belongs to the Flavivirdae virus family. There are more than 70 known members of the Flavividae family


fever begins with a sudden high fever, often as high as 104 - 105 degrees Fahrenheit, 4 to 7 days after the infection.A flat, red rash may appear over most of the body 2 - 5 days after the fever starts. A second rash, which looks like the measles, appears later in the disease. Infected people may have increased skin sensitivity and are very uncomfortable.Other symptoms include:•Fatigue•Headache (especially behind the eyes)•Joint aches•Muscle aches•Nausea•Swollen lymph nodes•Vomiting
