DEMOCRACY EVOLUTION:Wow! Democracy has come a long way from Ancient Athenswhere they used to vote with hollow and solid discs! Today we choose representatives to vote for us but here are the events in between:EUREKA STOCKADE 1854

INDIRECTORDIRECT?There are some different types of democracy -indirect and direct . Our Aussiedemocracy is an indirect democracy as our country elects representatives to vote their opinion instead of voting themselves - which is a direct democracy!

Democracy first originated in Greece ; Ancient Athens! It wasn't really a fair democracy as only a man who had two Athenian parents and who wasn't a freed slave or a foreigner could vote.It was a very selected democracy ; and not many people ticked all the boxes!

Passing New Laws:A bill can only become a law if it is passed by a majority vote in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The bill must be agreed to in identical form by both chambers, and given Royal Assent by the Governor-General. It is then known as an Act of Parliament. It may take weeks or even months for a bill to pass through Parliament. However, an urgent bill can be passed in a matter of days. About 200 bills are introduced into Parliament each year and about 90 per cent are passed into law.

FUN FACTA 'Plutocracy' is when rich people have higher rights and can rule!

THE FIRST FLEET:THE FOUNDERS OF A NATIONAUSTRALIA’S FIRST FLEET – 1788Between 1788 and 1850 the English sent over 162,000 convicts to Australia in 806 ships. The first eleven of these ships are today known as the First Fleet and contained the convicts and marines that are now acknowledged as the Founders of Australia.

Non-DemocraticCountriesThere are lots of countries that aren't true democratic countries. China, for example, is a Communist counrty! You are not allowed to practice a religion there !Here are, others....Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan Morocco, Bhutan ,Brunei ,United Arab Emirates ,Bahrain Oman, Qatar, Swaziland, Nepal, and Malaysia

EUREKA STOCKADEIt was the growing tension between the diggers and the authorities which led to one of the most dramatic events in Australia's history, the Eureka Rebellion. Tens of thousands of miners came together to burn their licences and raise their own flag.On Sunday the third of December, 1854, there was a brief but bloody battle at the Eureka mining camp where diggers had built a rough wooden stockade. 22 miners and 8 soldiers died.

WESTMINSTER SYSTEMThe Westminster system is a democratic parliamentary system of government modelled after the politics of the United Kingdom. This term comes from the Palace of Westminster, the seat of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
