DeGama

Vasco DeGama

DeGama was born in Portugal to a noble family in 1460. His father was also a knight, governor and explorer.

Vasco DeGama sailed from Portugal to Asia in 1497, looking for a route to the East.

Many people thought his voyage was impossible because they did not believe the Indian Ocean was connected to any other sea, but deGama proved that to be untrue.

Mission Accomplished! DeGama landed in Calicut, India in 1499. Many of his crew died on the expedition, however , from scurvy (a lack of Vitamin C).

DeGama died on December 24, 1524 in India from malaria, while serving as the Portugese King's representative to India.
