Where It Took Place The Gulf of Mexico
Environmental EffectsMarine life was killed. Grasses in the wetland regions were damaged but showed promise of recovery. The number of dead birds found along the coast is an estimate of a little over 3,000. Just over 500 sea turtles and 64 dolphins were found dead (BBC News). Air, water, and seafood contamination occured.
Human HealthThere were occupational health hazards as workers came in contact with fresh oil and chemicals used to help clean up the spill. Threats for human life include a post-dramatic stress disorder for the workers and community members involved in the spill.
Chemicals InvolvedHydrocarbons leaked into the Gulf before the well was closed and sealed, and 4.9 million barrels of oil were spilled into the Gulf.
Death toll11 out of the 126 workers died.
How It Happened- An explosion occurred on board of the Transocean Ltd Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The fire burned for 36 hours before the rig sank. - The oil rig sank after three days of the U.S. Coast Guard trying to put out flames.
