Original Signers

The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776. The original signers weren't all politicians. They were lawyers, doctors, farmers, and business owners. They were representatives from accross the colonies. The purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to formalize the will of the colonists to self-govern. They wanted to break away from the British Empire. This document was the first step to the creation of the United States of America.

Currently the Declaration of Independence is located in the National Archives. The rough draft is available for viewing at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.
