BRIEF OVERVIEW:1. Diaz new he wanted to be a "drawer" in first grade; later he had a teacher who helped him believe a career in the arts was possible. 2. Diaz apprenticed under Duane Hanson, hyper-realist sculptor, throughout high school and learned many new techniques.3. Diaz's first job as an illustrator was with the San Diego Reader weekly newspaper. 4. Inspired during a trip along the Amazon River in Brazil, Diaz made sketches that would later contribute to his first Caldecott winning book, Smoky Night. 5. Diaz and his wife reside in Carlsbad, San Diego today.
