Dating Violence

Abuse involving using technology, including cell phones, personal data assistants, and the Internet,to embarrass, harass, or threaten others. Includes excessive texts,sharing someone's personal information to cause embarrassment,posting rumors/iies, distributing pictures,and assuming another person's identity.

The abuser tries to make the target stay in the relationship by apologizing and/or trying to shift the blame for the abuse onto someone or something else.Examples: Giving gifts,Saying it won't happen again,blaming drugs or accusing the victim.

Tension is released in a burst of physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse.

Abuse involving saying or doing something to another person that causes the person to be afraid,feel manipulated/controlled,or have low self-esteem.Examples include:name calling,jealousy,humiliation,withholding info, embarrassment, and threatening to hurt you or someone you know (including themselves)

Abuse that involves sexual behavior in which one hasn't freely given their consent. Examples include: unwanted kissing or touching, forcing someone to do something sexually that he/she does not want to do, unwanted rough or violent sexual activity, not letting someone use contraceptives, and rape.

Things start to get tense between the two people.There is lots of arguing. Abuser yells at the victim for no reason. The Victim feels like they can't do anything right. The atmosphere is tense, as if things could blow up at any moment.

Abuse that involves intentional unwanted contact with another person's body. Marks and bruises do not have to be left to be considered physical abuse. Some examples are: using a weapon, pulling hair, kicking, shoving, slapping, burning, biting, pinching, choking, and scratching.

Abuse that involves the failure to meet a person's basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, love and support. Neglect is not violent, but it can result in future violence for the victim.
