- Doaism is a philosophical, ethical, political, and religious tradition of Chinese origin that emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao.- Tao means "way", "path", or "principle"- a Daoist attitude toward life can be seen as accepting and yielding, the joyful and carefree sides of the Chinese character- Toaism focused on a man's relationship with nature and the universe, and also focuses more on individual, spiritual life


- A central concept in Taoist philosophy is this theme of seeking the Tao by renouncing society, and this theme is revisited often in Taoist poetry and art- Taoism influenced the way they acted, the way they saw their environment and many things they did for their own wellbeing

Who founded it?

- In his book, Lao-tzu developed the main Taoist ideas and concepts- Lao-tzu applied his Taoist philosophy to the human conduct- He tried to describe what Tao is in his book and also tried to shape the life style of the sages in conformity with the immutable laws of the Universe

What is daoism?


6th to 2nd centuries B.C.E. - The Tao Te Ching, Chuang Tzu, Nei-yeh, Huai Nan Tzu, and Ma-wang-tui manuscripts were composed.2nd century B.C.E. to 2nd century C.E. - Cults of individuals searching for immortality and a holistic philosophical system emerged.2nd to 6th centuries - Physical-spiritual cultivation groups formed. Cultivation groups emerged and there were revelations of sacred scriptures. Classification of Taoist texts into a three-parts began.6 to 11th centuries - A distinct Taoist identity formed. The Taoist Canon was compiled.14th to 20th centuries- The Ming Canonwere the ast official collection of Taoist sacred texts. Gymnastic techniques like t’ai-chi ch’üan and ch’i-kung were developed.20th to 21st centuries - Taoism was disrupted by a series of political events, and then reestablished in China. Taoism also spread to Western countries.
