Cyberbullying

How can it be prevented?

Cyberbullying

Parents should be knowledgeable of what is happening in their child's life online and offline.Kids should be aware of the consequences that arise with participating in cyberbullying. For example, their ISP (Internet Seach Provider) or IM (Instant Message) accounts could be taken away (STOP Cyberbullying).

What is it?

What are the components of bullying?

Real-life example:

Margarite, a fourteen-year-old girl from Lacey, Washington sent an explicit photo of herself to her ex-boyfriend, Isaiah hoping to rekindle a spark in their relationship. The photo was forwarded to almost everyone in her school. Margarite was sent degrading slurs on her phone and on social media. Her reputation was destroyed. Sexting can lead to cyberbullying as easy as a tap of a button. It is imperative that these examples are being made known to teenagers. Nobody should ever have to feel like Margarite during her downward spiral of events (Hoffman).

"Cyberbullying is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones (STOP Cyberbullying).

* An intention to do harm. * A power imbalance between the bully and the victim. * An act that is repeated (Blood).
