The American Revolution

The American Revolution (aka The Revolutionary War) lasted from 1775 through 1783. The Revolutionary War was fought between the residents of Great Britain’s 13 North American colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown. Armed conflict began when colonial militiamen and British troops had the battle of Lexington and Concord in April 1775, the rebels were leading a full scale fight for their independence by the following summer. There were ten founding fathers total, they are George Washington, Samuel Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, John Hancock, and Gouverneur Morris. Even though the American Revolution began in 1775, tensions had been building for more than a decade before it. This was mainly due to the attempts by the British government to raise revenue by taxing the colonies (this mainly included the Stamp Act of 1765, the Townshend Tariffs of 1767, and the Tea Act of 1773). In 1778 the French entered the revolution on the side of the colonists. Even though fighting will not formally end until 1783, the colonists won their independence in 1781 after the British surrendered at the battle of Yorktown, Virginia; the French also assisted the colonists in this battle.
