The specs for this new generation of so-called, "picosatellites," was first conceived in 1999 by professors at Cal. Poly. and Stanford University to enable graduate students to develop and test projects in space, aboard cheap satellites with capabilities similar to that of Sputnik.The first of these palm sized satellites were launched in 2003 with the help of the Russian Eurockot. Following a successful debute, there are now over 100 of these satellites in space at any given moment.

What are CubeSat's?


CubeSat's are 10cm x 10cm x 10cm, one liter, cube sattelites that cost about $50,000 to build, and only about another $100,000 to launch into space. The designs for these satellites are completely open source, the parts are relatively easy to accquire, and one doesn't need to have a degree in rocket science to successfully build and launch one of these. Staying up in low Earth orbit, LEO, for around 40 days on average, they are commonly sent up by corporations, universities, and amateur radio(ham radio) enthusiasts to conduct research, snap breath-taking photos, and handle communications.
