February 15: the USS Maine battleship explodes, the United States blames Spain, resulting in the start of the Spanish-Cuban-American War.On April 20: the United States joins Cuba and signs the Teller Amendment saying that they would help gain their independence from Spain with as much military equipment as necessary.
March: workers in Cuba started going on strike because they wanted a higher pay, overtime pay, pay on Sundays, and holidays.
