Matter and Energy

In any chemical reaction, matter changes form; it is neither created nor destroyed. Kinetic energy is energy contained in moving objects. Potential energy is energy that is latent but available for use. Chemical energy is energy that is stored in the food that organisms eat and the gasoline that you put in a car. Heat describes the energy that can be transferred between objects if different temperature.

The three states of matter include solid, liquid, and gas. The three states of matter can form different kinds of energy. The various forms of energy include heat, electric, sound, chemical, mechanical, and light.

Physical Science

Heat is the total kinetic energy of all the atoms that make up a substance. Radiation is the transfer of energy through space by electromagnetic waves. Latent energy is energy used to change matter from one form to the next. Radiant, electrical, chemical, and nuclear are different kinds of energy.

Biomass is the total mass of living matter in a given unit area. Electrical energy is energy that is made available by the flow of electric charge through a conductor which is usually made of metal. There is no electric charge through an insulator which is usually not made of metal. Energy conversion is a change from one form of energy to another.

Disciplinary Core Ideas: Definitions of Energy: Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles of matter. The relationship between the temperature and the total energy of a system depends on the types, states, and amounts of matter present. (MS-PS3-3), (MS-PS3-4)

The hands-on minds-on activity applies scientific ideas or principles to design, construct, and test which materials would be good insulators or conductors. Bottles of hot water are covered with different materials. After this, temperature is taken from the water. Jars are then securely covered. After twenty minutes, the jars are uncovered and then the temperature is taken from the water again. A class discussion is initiated about which materials held the heat in better and which materials seemed to let the heat flow out of the jar. The construction of explanations and solutions is supported by the evidence of scientific ideas, principles, and theories of matter and energy. While waiting the twenty minutes, a wooden, plastic, and metal spoon is placed into a bowl of hot water.

Anything which has mass and occupies space is called matter.Energy is the number that we can associate to a system of particles or objects, if force changes one of the objects by moving it then the number changes.
