When they picked the mountain
Korczak and Standing Bear traveled for almost a thousand miles into the Black Hills one summer in search of a suitable mountain.
They have received big donations to complete the head of Crazy Horse and are now working on the horse’s head. The memorial has no completion date but, the Ziolkowski family says someday they want to complete the project.
In 1876 he joined with Cheyenne forces in a surprise attack against General Custer; then united with chief Sitting Bull for the Battle of Little Bighorn . In 1877, Crazy Horse surrendered at Fort Robinson, Nebraska and was killed in a scuffle with soldiers .
When completed it will be 641 feet long and 563 feet high. All four 60-foot high heads on Mt. Rushmore would fit inside just Crazy Horse's head.
During the first blast of the mountain the memorial was officially dedicated on June 3, 1948. Five of the nine living participants of the Battle of Little Bighorn were present.
