Haight Ashbury was known as the hippie capital in San Francisco California. This was because pyschedelic drugs were not illegal.
In contrast to conformity and violence, a new counter cuture was created. This counter culture was based upon peace, love, and harmony. The people involved in this movement were known as hippies.
Many hippies were encouraged to take drugs. The main drugs were marijuana and a new hallucinogenic called LSD. This acid was encouraged because it was "mind-expanding." They believed one whould reach zen eventually. Although, the side effects of the drugs were fatal. Popular artists, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin died from a drug overdose.
Counter Culture
Hippies expanded on the beat movement of the 1950's and adopted the moto from a Havard professor Timothy Leary, "Tune in, turn on, drop out." This lead to young people dropping out of school or work to go and live a life of peace and simplicity.
