Despite the fact that there were earlier theories about the CMBR, it was accidentally found by Arno Penzias and Robert Woodrow Wilson first. In 1978, Penzias and Wilson were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for their joint discovery.

Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation
The discovery of the CMBR supported the Big Bang model of the universe. For example, the scientists have noticed that the light from other galaxies is red shifted and this signifies that the other galaxies are moving away from us. Also, the further away a galaxy is, the more its light is red-shifted and the most likely explanation is that the whole universe is expanding. This supports the theory that the start of the universe could have been from a single explosion and continues to expand. Finally, the fact that the CMBR exists proves that it is the remains of energy created just after the Big Bang.
During the development of the universe, radiation was left from an early stage and this is known as the CMBR. They are microwaves coming from every direction in space. Furthermore, the radiation can only be detected with a radio telescope which makes it show as a faint glow. This glow is strongest in the microwave area of the radio spectrum.
