Cornelius Vanderbilt had a monopoly of on shipping between California and the Atlantic coast. He did not wown it but it was owned by Americas primary transatlantic line and it dominated Wall Street. He did not treat his workers very well. He made them work long hours and did not recieve a lot of compensation for the work they did. He did give many unemployed people jobs though.

Cornelius Vanderbilt became rich by building railroads and shipping. He is was the patriarch of his family. He made steamboats and steamship lines. He used vertical integration to control every part of the shipping industries. Cornelius Vanderbilt over powered Andrew Carnigie to become rich.

How he pushed the United States into World Power status

Cornelius Vanderbilt pushed the United States into World Power status by creating steamboats and the railroad which created transportation. Which allowed people to transport accros the country or the United States. He also put railroads in the North East.
