Convergent boundary process subduction

When continental and oceanic plates push against each other the thinner and more dense oceanic plate is overridden by the thicker and less dense continental plate. The oceanic plate is forced down into the mantle in which is known as subduction.


The process I choose for my convergent boundary is subduction.

The types of plates that are involved in this process are continental and oceanic plates.

A convergent boundary moves inwards towards eachother



One of my features is a volcano. A volcano is formed by pressure, friction, and by the oceanic plate melting into the mantle.

My second feature is a trench. A trench is formed by a dense oceanic plate colliding with a less-dense continental plate and the oceanic plate is forced underneath because of the continental lithosphere, forming a subduction zone. At the surface, Which is a oceanic trench.

The Earth's mantle has convection currents because the temperature of the core's heat energy is transferred to the mantle, causing it to rise towards Earth's surface, which is cooler. As the heated mantle transfers its heat energy to the lithosphere, it becomes more dense than the surrounding magma and sinks back down towards the core. Which is how mantle convection is shown.
