overview
in the time period of modernism, during the economic boom, americans believed that through consumerism thet could buy their own happiness, as shown by the author F. Scott Fitzgerald in the novel The Great Gatzby. in this novel Fitzgerald wrote about the luxurious lives that americans lived through consumerism. this consumerism was made possible by the economic boom, which was fueled by the new technologies and methods of manufacturing. overall people generally bought and bought in order to live their life as luxurious as everyone else in the american culture.
consumerism can be thought of as the culture of buying\selling products. with consumerism, our society has been focused on consuming goods. as a mean to make society feel better and to drive the economy. consumerism can affect an individual in a number of ways. like, psychological health, and the "true self" vs. "false self".

transcendentalism was considered to be brought up by Ralph waldo emerson," we will walk on our own feet; we will work with our own hands; we will speak our own minds...a nation of men will for the first time exist, because each believes himself inspired by the devine soul which also insopires all men." which means we should all be individual and standalone without the express means of following one another's ideas/paths
post modernism reveals that people are viewed differently based on whqat they own. post moderism takes place from 1940 -present day, and founded the belief that there is no "absolute truth". a popular form of writing created in this time perios is "free verse poetry". John Ashberry uses this form of writing in his poem "the instruction manual", where he analyzes how, just by looking at someone you can learn information about them. based on what they have. the narrorator sees a young girl and observes "she carries a fan. she must be modest, and does not want the crown to see her face too often."
in realism authors looked to capture in a sense a "picture" of the event being wrote about. through facts and in depth descriptions. an example of this is Uncle Toms Cabin. this demonstrates the issues and harsh reality brought upon by slavery.the consumer trend amongst the people of this time was slavery and the products and revenue that it produces.
