Consumerism
How is it really affecting us?
What is Consumerism?
Consumerism is the purchasing and intake of goods and services. The more things bought, means the welfare of the economy will benefit. The concept that expanding consumption is advantageous and if nothing changes, the boost of money will keep rising. The unlimited ‘wants’ and ‘needs’, are constantly increasing. Credit card debts are escalating and the overconsumption could possibly lead to millions of people in a crisis. People are being told by marketing companies that in order to be happy, you need to consume more by purchasing things. The technique in this is so that the companies will earn money from people purchasing their goods.
What Are The Problems?
what really brings happiness and contentment?
Todays Society
Has Our Modern-day Society Really Become So Materialistic ?
Todays generation has become so excessively concerned with material possesion and its had a major impact on people. The idea nowadays is, in order to be happier, better and more successful, we have to have more stuff. We are constantly being exposed and bombarded by commercials and ads. Statistics have shown that each day, we come across approximately 1,600 advertisments. Constantly seeing them makes us want more, and update to a newer and better version of what we previously had. It's a viscious cycle and it will only keep continuing but this is where people need to get their priorities right and stand back and be comfortable with what they already have.Effects on a global scale-Consumerism keeps on increasing and has the impact of increasing prices. If more products and items are being bought, prices will rise so that the sellers will be able to make more profit. - Constantly having people purchase products makes factories run out of resources. Items that are made from toxic materials will need to be re-produced and this harms the environment.- Natural resources such as wood, metals, land, and fresh produce from crops will begin to become limited due to the high demands.
"We are richer but unhappier, spending to save and working longer to enjoy less".
