The Conservative Response
Many conservatives were very alarmed by the riots breaking out across campuses. The rebels threatened America's traditional values and were labelled revolutionary terrorists by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. The widespread belief among conservatives was that these people were causing America to lose its sense of right and wrong. This caused a very definitive split as the conservative movement put out their own ideas on how to solve the problems of lawlessness, crime, and welfare. The conservatives nominated Richard Nixon for the presidency; his victory set America on a more conservative path for the future.
1. Who did the conservatives put into the White House?2. Why did they consider these rebels a danger?3. Who claimed that these protests were "revolutionary terrorism?"4. What problems did the conservatives decide to tackle with their own ideas?5. Was it successful?
