Rhode Island &Connecticut


The Economy concentrated on manufacturing. While the town life focused on industries, such as ship building and the export of rum. They made their living on fishing, whaling and ship building.

The name was derived from the Indian name "Quinnehtukqut" which means "beside the long tidal river."

The first circus in the United States was in Rhode Island in 1774.

Founded in 1636 by Thomas Hooker.


The Economy struggled with farming, they tried to sustain themselves with pumpkins, squash, beans, rice, and corn. They were unable to produce wheat and took to fishing, whaling, and ship building, as a way of life.

The colony was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, and other colonists such as Anne Hutchinson.

Rhode Island was the first colony to declare independence from Great Britain.

Conneticut was the 5th of the original 13 colonies to become a state on January 9, 1788.

The official name of the state is State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
