[2015] Alex Gentry (COSC 1401): Computers and Mobile Devices

A server is a computer dedicated to providing one or more services to other computers or devices on a network. Servers are used in all online games. A supercomputer is the fastest, most powerful computer — and the most expensive. The average human does not have access to a supercomputer. A terminal is a computer hat enables users to send data to and/or receive information from a server, or host computer. An ATM is an example of a terminal.

Computers & Mobile Devices

A desktop is a personal computer (PC) that has a computer, monitor, and various other peripherals. Desktops often sit atop a desk, which is where they got their name. Desktops are different than mobile computers, such as laptops and tablets. Desktops are often differentiated by the type of operating system they use, but the operating systems you are probably most familiar with are Mac and Windows.

Chapter 3

Mobile devices are devices with the ability to compute that are small enough to fit in your hand. Some examples of mobile devices are: smartphones, digital cameras, portable media players, and e-book readers. There have been controversies regarding the disposal of mobile devices; only about 20% of e-waste is recycled. There are currently several states that have laws mandating the recycling of e-waste.

Mobile Devices

Cloud computing is a groundbreaking way of accessing and storing data. Rather than accessing resources locally, you access them through "the cloud". Cloud computing is also useful for storage; when using services such as Google Drive and iCloud, you can save documents without taking up space on your PC.

An embedded computer is a computer with a designated special purpose that functions as a component in a larger product. These types of products can be found everywhere: at work, at home, and even in your car. Without these types of computers, a lot of products wouldn't be able to work. Examples of embedded computers include thermostats, appliances, cruise control, keyboards, printers, and fax machines.

Embedded Computers

A port is the connecting point between a computer, mobile device, or peripheral device. Ports are used to send or recieve data between devices. A connecter is what physically joins a cable to a port. Without a connecter, a port is essentially worthless.
