Comparison of the Two TheoriesIn Dalton's 5th principle he stated that in reactions, atoms are rearranged, never created or destroyed. Democritus' theory states almost the same thing, that atoms cannot be created nor destroyed.

Comparing Atomic Theories and the Development of the Atomic Model

E. RutherfordErnest Rutherford was a British physicist and chemist. Rutherford did not believe in the "plum pudding" model, instead believed that the atom consisted of a very small, dense nucleus surrounded by moving electrons. He was also the first physicist to suceed in splitting the atom. He used the gold foil experiment to study the atoms and their alpha particles. He discovered from this that elements with a higher atomic mass reflected back more alpha particles. This helped shape the atomic theory we use today.

Niels BohrNiels Bohr studied with E. Rutherford and J.J. Thomson in college. He studied a lot with quantum physics and eventually solved Rutherford's problem- the electron's place in the atom. He also declared that atoms could not move without putting off energy. He produced a model- Bohr's Model- to describe the placement of the electrons.

J. J. ThomsonJ. J. Thomson was an English physist, who discovered that the electron helps make up the atom. He made a new model of the atom called "Plum Pudding." He thought the atom to have a positively charged cloud, that consisted of randomly charged electrons. He used cathode rays to seperate two types of particles, creating isotopes. This discovery helped the making of the first spectrometer.

John DaltonJohn Dalton was a British chemist. He started out as a meteorologist, which led to his discovery that all elements are made up of tiny particles; atoms. His theory is that atoms in each element are identical in size and weight.

DemocritusDemocritus was a Greek philosopher who was the first person to discover the existence of atoms. He belived that atoms were never created, but always there. His theory is that atoms cannot be created nor destroyed.

The atomic model has changed dramat-ically ober the past 200 years. It has settled on the assumption that the negatively charged electrons revolve around the nucleus, which contains the neutrons and protons of the atom.
