In 1986 it was recorded that there were only two community shared agriculture programs in the U.S. SInce then, CSA has grown massively. In 2012 it was estimated that there were were 6,000 CSA's and as many as 6,500. The program has continued to expand since then as well. Community supported agriculture has become very common and continues to grow for many reasons. This program is beneficial to everybody involved and it will only continue to grow as the years go by.
Community Supported Agriculture
CSA is a common way that people can buy produce directly from local farmers. The farmers offer a certain number of shares up to the public. These shares typically consist of a box or vegetables, but they can also include other products of the farm. People can then purchase a subscription/ share from the farmer and they will then recieve a box of produce each week throughout the farming season.
WHat is CSA?
CSA
There are many advantages to CSA for both the consumer and the farmer. One of the advantages for the farmerts is that they are able to get to know the people that are consuming their food. Also, they are able to receive payment early in the season which helps their cash flow. This program helps the farmers to be successful, but there are also many advantages for the consumer. The people that are a part of CSA recieve the most nutrients out of their food because they are getting their food directly from the farmer and they get it very soon after the product has been harvested. They also get exposed to a lot of new vegetables. The people that are a part of CSA also get to know their local farmer and learn a lot about how the foods they eat are grown and develop a new appreciation for the work that goes into growing food.
