The USSR sided with Northern Vietnam. This isn't very surprising, as Russia was eager to expand communism into the Asian hemisphere. Asian expansion would tip the balance against the West. Because Joseph Stalin wanted to maintain his post-war alliance with the West, he gave only marginal support to the communist movements in Vietnam. Even upon the brink of victory, when Ho Chi Minh requested military support from Russia, Stalin refused, and instead encouraged Communist Chinese leader Mao Zedong to support Minh.

Map of Vietnam During the Vietnam War

The DMZ separated the North side of Vietnam from the South. It ran along the Ben Hai River for the mostpart, and was about 100 KM north fo the city of Hue.

Vietnam War began in March 1959, Ho Chi Minh tried to unite Vietnam causing communism to split Vietnam into two. Northern Vietnam was supported by the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union. Southern Vietnam was supported by anti-communist countries especially the United States. In December 1961 United States began to take a direct role in the war and in 1965 sends troops to combat. United States lost and Southern Vietnam was taken under the control of Northern Vietnam.

"You see the reason we're in Indochina is to protect us boys in Indochina," May 5, 1970.Cartoon symbolizes the deep involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War.

Picture shows exhausted Southern Vietnamesesoldiers during the war againstcommunism in the North.

American involvement in Vietnam from late 1945 was shaped by the Cold War. The US government believed that communism must be contained, in both Europe and Asia. If this did not occur, then communism would jump from one nation to others. With its poorly controlled borders and weak governments they believed Communism would reach vietnam. So they Allied with South and fought against North.
