Cold War Spy Planes

Why Were Spy Planes Necessary?During the Cold War it became necessary to have constant intel on the enemy. The development of spy planes greatly increased the quality of intel gathered. The American U-2 played the most important role in the Cold War, specifically for discovering the Russian nuclear missile silos on Cuba. The SR-71 Blackbird came along later in the war, with the ability to travel into low orbit provided a greater tactical advantage for the observer.
