Cochlear Implants

Cochlear implants require a surgical procedure and heavy therapy to learn or relearn the sense of hearing. Both adults and children who are deaf or severely hard-of-hearing can be fitted for cochlear implants. Children as old as 12 months can recieve one type of cochlear implant!

An electronic device surgically implanted in the ear to stimulate the nerve for hearing. It provides the sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. Cochlear implants include a sound processor that sends signals to the internal device through a cable unit. The internal device is surgically placed under that skin.

What can be done?

What is it?

Aside from benefits of perceived loud, medium and soft sounds, understanding speech without lip-reading, being able to hear, and communication in general, cochlear implants could potentially lead to even more in the future!

So, how does it work?!

Why does it matter?

Cochlear Implants

Possible use of shortened electrode arrays, inserted into a portion of the cochlea, for individuals whose hearing loss is limited to higher frequencies!Ways to make a chochlear implant convey the sounds of speech more clearly! Also, potential benefits of pairing an implant in one ear with either another implant or a hearing aid in the other!
