Cons

Some advantages is that coal is cheap and is very easy to find. Coal is stable and is easy to store and transport. It is also very easy to turn it into energy. New technology can now burn coal hotter and cleaner.

Coal pollutes the air a lot and produces a lot of carbon dioxide. It also speeds up global warming and it releases toxins that are dangerous. Coal mining also hurts habitats and the environment. Coal mining also has a lot of accidents and coal transportation is expensive.

What Is It

Coal is a brownish blackish sedimentary rock made mostly of carbon. It takes millions of years to form because giant plants gets buried under rocks and dirt than the heat and pressure turns it into coal.

How It Works

When coal burns it makes water turn into steam which spins a turbine. That turbine will move a generator than makes electricity. It can also be used to make things like plastic.

Where It's Found

Coal is found in 25 states. Wyoming leads in the most coal production followed by West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Almost 29% of the U.S. coal comes from the Appalachian Mountains. It is found underground.
