Clasification of Changes in Matter

Our Guiding Question

Our Group Members

Our Claim

Which changes are examples of a chemical change, and which are examples of physcial change?

Our Justification of the Evidence

Our Evidence

Scenarios #2 and #3 are examples of chemical change while scenarios #1,#4, and #5 are examples of physical changes.

Scenerio 1. Water + Salt- *The salt particles were still visible upon stirring in the water. *If you boil salt water you can take the salt out.Scenerio 2. Magnesium+Heat-*When the magnesium strip was heated over a bunson burner it caused a chemical change. In 17 seconds it turned to ash and had a burning scent. Also, where the magnesium was, there was a white flame. FInally, the magnesium curled into a ball while it was heated. Scenerio 3. Sodium Hydroxide +Copper Nitrate- *The sodium hydroxide had a pH level of 12, the copper (II) Nitrate had a pH of 3 and combined the pH became 4. *When combined the solution somewhat columoed together and almost looked powdery and opaque but remained a liquid.Scenerio 4. Sodium Hydrochloric Acid+Sodium Bicarbonate- *The Hydrochloric acid had a pH of 1 and the Sodium Bicarbonate had a pH of 8 and combined the pH became 8. When combined the solution sizzled for a second and then became a large clump.Scenerio 5. Paraffin Wax+Hot Water Bath-*Once heated in a hot water bath with a temperature of 94 degrees Celsius, melted together at first and exposed what looked like yellow veins. After about 15 seconds, it fully melted into a clear liquid. Once the hot water was aloud to cool, the opaque was reformed inside the test tube.

EXPERIMENT TITLE:ADI23: Classification of Changes in Matter

Scenerio 1. Water+Salt- Since you could distinguish the salt from the water it was a physical change, for they were two different materials. It also sounds like a physical change because you can remove the salt from the substance by heating it.Scenerio 2. Magnesium+Heat- The evidence supports the arguement becuase it is impossible to change the magnesium strip back into its original form after it was burned. Scenerio 3. Sodium Hydroxide+Copper Nitrate- The evidence shows that a chemical change occurred because the PH levels went from a 12 and a 3 to a 4. Also, the chemicals, when combined, changed state and would not be possible to change them back to their original forms.Scenerio 4. Hydrochloric Acid+Sodium Bicarbonate- The evidence shows that a chemical change occurred because the PH levels went from a 12 and a 3 to a 4. Also, the chemicals, when combined, changed state and would not be possible to change them back to their original forms.Scenerio 5. Paraffin Wax+Hot Water Bath- Experiment number five is an example of a physical change simply because the wax returned to its original state. Once melted in hot water, it was a clear liquid that looked nothing like its natural form. Then, the test tube was given time to cool. This lead the wax to regain its original form. Since it is possible to restore the original state to the material, it is classified as a physical change.
