The Battle of Gettysburg was fought in Pennsylvania. On July 1, it was won as the Union regained its ground. This was the largest battle in the Western Hemisphere.
On January 1st, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring all Confederate slaves, "then thenceforward, and forever free."
