The bloodiest day of the war was September 17 during the Battle of Antietam. This battle gave Lincoln the opportunity to take action against slavery.

The Battle of Gettysburg was fought in Pennsylvania. On July 1, it was won as the Union regained its ground. This was the largest battle in the Western Hemisphere.

On January 1st, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring all Confederate slaves, "then thenceforward, and forever free."
